Giorgio Buzzavo, born in 1947 in Treviso, a former professional basketball player at the highest Italian levels (with a long militancy in the ranks of Virtus Bologna) and later manager of sporting goods companies such as Spalding, Lotto and Caber, since 1991 he is CEO of VerdeSport, the operating sports company of the Benetton Group. Subsequently becoming President of Benetton Basketball and Sisley Volleyball and the CEO of Asolo Golf Club.
During his position as President, the Benetton sports Teams were enriched with 51 trophies: in fact, Benetton Basketball won 5 National Championships, 8 Italian Cups and 2 European Cups. Sisley Volleyball won 9 National Championships, 5 Italian Cups and 4 European Cups, together with a dozen other trophies in the Italian and Continental arena and 9 National Championships from Benetton Rugby.
VerdeSport, in addition to the facilities management of La Ghirada, Palaverde and Asolo Golf Club, has distinguished itself as one of the more important sporting groups in the European panorama, a model organization and an inexhaustible font of initiatives aiming at developing a dimension both professional and social: as for example the campaign “grow together in Sport in Treviso”, which for 15 years has coordinated the sporting activity of 100 companies and more than 7,000 children under the age of 11 within the Treviso Province, or the National Basketball Tournament 3on3 Join the Game (35,000 athletes under 14 years old throughout Italy), the Summer Camps in La Ghirada for both players and “officials”, the International Basketball Summer League and various
co-marketing activities involving 300 companies local and national partners.
Again with the aim of supplying activities that bind the sports world to the social sphere, since 2005 VerdeSport has been promoting a Masters Program in Strategies for the Sport Business, a Post Graduate Masters Course, which combines the fervent teaching activities at La Ghirada Sports Center to the internship, supported by a network of 100 businesses, most of them working within the Sports Industry.
The most recent project combines sport and social development for early childhood and is linked to the project of the children’s playground Primo Sport 0246 and the no-profit organisation Laboratorio 0246, which promotes the issues of early childhood education at a national level, focusing on the importance of developing motor skills of young children
Married with Rossana, he has two sons, Andrea and Alberto.
